Established in 1958, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (also known as IIT Bombay or IIT Mumbai) is the first public college to have laid its foundation stone with assistance from UNESCO. In 1961, it was declared as an ‘Institute of National Importance’ by the Parliament of India. It has been declared a 'Deemed University' and is autonomous in nature. IIT Bombay has been ranked 177 in the QS World Rankings 2022. For the year 2021, NIRF has ranked IIT Mumbai at 3 for the both Overall and Engineering category. IIT Bombay was also ranked 2 in the ARIIA rankings 2020 under the category of National Importance. With a lifespan of more than 60 years, the Deemed University campus has grown to include 15 academic departments, 34 centres, 17 departments and three schools to offer more than 60 courses in the stream of Engineering and Technology, Science and Management at UG, PG and doctoral levels. Much like other IITs, the flagship course of IIT Bombay is BTech with a total intake of 1,036 students.
IIT Bombay also offers Continuing Education & Quality Improvement Program (CE & QIP) for working professionals from both academia and industry. For the year 2020-21, a total of 945 participants attended 51 CEP courses in 2021. The varsity also houses an online platform namely IITBombayX that offers Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to global participants. IIT Bombay MOOCs has been launched in collaboration with edX which is a non-profit initiative taken by Harvard and MIT. These online courses are usually offered for a minimum of four weeks duration to a maximum of 12 weeks. IIT Bombay has an umbrella organisation known as Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE) for entrepreneurship and tech start-ups under which it has completed 180+ start-ups, 800+ Entrepreneurs, 5000+ Employments. The Deemed University is also a member of Links to Asia by Organizing Traineeship and Student Exchange (LAOTSE), which promotes exchange programmes for students and senior scholars in Europe and Asia.
IIT Bombay's placement records are yet another feather to its cap. During Phase-1 of the 2021 placements drive, 1,382 students accepted job offers, accounting for more than 78% of the total batch strength. The Deemed University recorded 12 job offers of more than INR 1 crore per annum, including seven international offers and five domestic offers. The average CTC offered to students is INR 17.91 LPA, with the highest CTC reaching INR 2.05 crore per annum.
IIT Bombay offers over 86 courses at UG, PG and PhD level in the stream of Engineering, Technology, Science and Management. Besides, the Deemed University also offers short-term certificate online courses like Object-oriented Programming, Programming Basics, etc. Admission to the UG and PG courses is based on national-level entrance exams like JEE Main, JEE Advanced, GATE, etc. While the duration of UG courses ranges between three and four years, most of the PG courses are of two years. IIT Bombay offers MS Research in the Department of Computer Science Engineering in three specialisations and PhD course in seven specialisations. The Deemed University conducts a separate written test to shortlisted candidates for MS Research and PhD programmes.
IIT Bombay cut off 2021 is the minimum rank required by the candidates in JEE Advanced to be eligible for admission to the Deemed University.
